All The TV Shows That Have Been Canceled in 2017

Published on 12/08/2017

Over the years, fans have suffered many hard losses. From ABC’s Pushing Daises to Veronica Mars on CW, audiences always have to nervously await to see if their favorite pulled through. Unfortunately, 2017 has not given television fans a break. So read on, to see which shows won’t live to see 2018. Here’s to hope that like, Arrested Development or Gilmore Girls, these shows on our list may find new life on a different network.

American Crime

For three seasons, ABC aired American Crime, starring Felicity Huffman, Timothy Hutton and W. Earl Brown among other stars. Actually, the network thought of debuting a mini fourth season. However, in May, the network announced the show’s official end. Despite, receiving positive reviews from critics, the show did not have high enough viewership. One common critique of the show was that it felt too political and of the time instead of a fun fictional show to enjoy.

American Gothic

Featuring Juliet Rylance, Antony Starr and Justin Chatwin, this CBS murder mystery show only lasted one season. With only 13 episodes to its name, not many were surprised to see it go. Critics and audiences alike felt the show did not live up to its hype. However, Juliet will soon be moving onto her next project, a BBC miniseries called McMafia coming out next year.

APB

Sadly, this show too was canceled after just one season on FOX. The drama starring Justin Kirk and Natalie Martinez did not have the best ratings. However, if you’re interested in Justin’s other work, the movie The Tribes Of Palos Verdes will be coming out soon. Luckily, FOX has another five shows coming out that may redeem their name, including a Vegas-based comedy, doctor drama show and Marvel adaptation.

The Blacklist: Redemption

Well, we all know what a hit the original series was, which was picked up for a fifth season with NBC. Unfortunately, this spin-off show did not quite do the crime thriller justice! With just eight episodes released, it’s still unclear whether the original series will work in these new characters for the upcoming season.

Bones

12 seasons later, fans have to say goodbye to their beloved Bones, which began in 2005. Of course, David Boreanaz first became a sensation with Buffy The Vampire Slayer but wasted no time jumping into Bones after his spin-off Angel on the WB was canceled. Now, he’s set to lead the CBS show SEAL Team. As of now, we don’t know what Emily Deschanel plans to do next, but our fingers our crossed she’ll return to our TVs soon.

Braindead

Many were excited to see Monk‘s Tony Shalhoub along with Aaron Tveit and Mary Elizabeth Winstead in this political satire on CBS. Actually, the show had been planned out for four seasons of extraterrestrial invasions across the U.S., but they only lasted the one season of the D.C. invasion. After hearing of the cancellation, Robert King, the show’s creator, remarked, “It was a show that was trying to be as weird and anti-network as could be, and it was probably a mistake to do that on a network. But I loved that show.”

Chelsea

Funny woman Chelsea Handler enjoyed two seasons of her Netflix show before they announced its cancellation. Thankfully, Netflix is not giving up on Chelsea just yet. With her announcement of the show’s end, Chelsea mentioned her upcoming Netflix documentary that will be more political. So keep an eye out for that!

Chicago Justice

Surprisingly, the famous Dick Wolf, responsible for Law & Order, was behind this show. Unfortunately, Chicago Justice did not make it past season one. If you’re devastated that Peter Stone and the rest of the gang won’t be returning, you can purchase the season on DVD for endless enjoyment.

2 Broke Girls

Heartbreaking, right? After six hilarious seasons, fans have to part with Caroline and Max. It wasn’t just another show about dating or criminal justice, this show was quirky and endearing. They were one of the best TV friendships we’ve ever watched. CBS stated they had to end the show because of “creative purposes.” At least we have six seasons to go back and binge on.

Sleepy Hollow

Four seasons just was not enough for this amazing FOX show! With an all star cast including not just the leads but even talents like Nikki Reed, fans could not get enough. Though, we see how they dug an early grave once they killed off the main character. After Nicole Beharie left the show at the end of season three, it did feel like a foreshadowing of the show’s final end. Unfortunately, we don’t know of any new projects from Tom Mison yet.

Conviction

Whether it’s the fact that the most iconic legal dramas are at our fingertips now or that the concept is overdone, people were not about this ABC show. Again, this show only made it one full season. Critics and audiences alike did not have positive things to say. In fact, the show got a 1 star rating on Rotten Tomatoes….yeah just one star, we are serious. Many felt the concept was too similar to the surplus of other legal dramas out there.

Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders

Not really sure why CBS opted for this spin-off when the last Criminal Minds spin-off, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, only lasted a season. Hey, I mean at least this one made it through two seasons. Anyway, CBS just needs to face that the hit show works so well on its own, you just can’t replicate it.

Downward Dog

Most shows at least make it through a 13 episode season. Unfortunately, this ABC show only made it to 8 episodes. However, the showrunners are not ready to throw in the towel just yet. They’re hoping another network will resurrect the show. Remember, The Killing, Community, Futurama and even Arrested Development all got canceled only to come back on another network or streaming service. So, good luck to them!

Dr. Ken

This ABC show lasted two seasons and had a surprising amount of big name guest stars such as, Dr. Oz, Joel McHale and even Margaret Cho. Unfortunately, even these big names could not help this show through. Perhaps, the Friday night timeslot did not help the cause either. Critics also did not review it favorably and Rotten Tomatoes lists its rating at a lousy 7 percent. Ouch.

Emerald City

NBC’s Emerald City, based on a book, felt like The Wizard of Oz meets Game of Thrones as many viewers observed. Unfortunately, the show failed to live up to all the hype. It was canceled after one season. Well, there’s more coming for Adria Arjona, Dorothy from the show. In 2018, two movies she starred in will be released, Life of the Party and Pacific Rim: Uprising.

Frequency

This CW show only lasted one season, which many believe is because it did not seem to fit the CW mold. Based on Gregory Hoblit’s movie from 2000, the show starred Peyton List. You may recognize Peyton from other CW shows. Anyway, after the network pulled the plug, they released an epilogue for fans who needed closure.

For Better Or For Worse

Maybe you remember, but this series based on Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? started on TBS for two seasons. It’s a great concept that takes a hilarious look at marriage, which is very different than dating. Anyway after TBS, OWN picked it up. Sadly, the sixth season will be its last and it is not even the only Perry show the network cut…

Girl Meets World

Everyone adored Boy Meets World, but sadly, this reboot did not make it past season three. Many fans protested and even tried to get Netflix to pick up where Disney left off. While the show’s creator has not yet lost hope. He said, “I can tell you it’s because of the audience’s reaction to the cancellation that there is interest in other places.”

Girlboss

Unfortunately, this Netflix show based on the real life of Sophia Amoruso, creator of Nasty Gal, only made it one season. The show’s star Britt Robertson just cannot seem to catch a break. Both her other shows, The Secret Circle and Life Unexpected, were canceled early on. However, you can be hopeful for her next show also starring Ben Rappaport on ABC called For the People.

Good Girls Revolt

Another based on a true story show, this Amazon series was seen as the female Mad Men. People were upset the show only made it one season. Many felt Amazon did not give it a chance to reach its potential.

Grimm

While its competitor Once Upon A Time just got renewed for season seven, Grimm was not as lucky. The show did not a full six seasons though. Of course, it was no surprise to hear NBC was ending the show due to its low ratings. Sadly, audiences failed to save their show even after they attempted to get signatures to prove its popularity. Better luck next time!

Gypsy

With a legend like Naomi Watts, one might be surprised this Netflix show only made it for the first season and just six weeks online. Many predicted this show about an unprofessional psychotherapist would be an instant sensation. Unfortunately, critics did not agree.

Haters Back Off

Perhaps, you know Colleen Ballinger’s YouTube persona, Miranda Sings. With more than eight million subscribers, one would imagine her Netflix series to also be a hit. Sadly, it only lasted two seasons. Viewers felt the show seemed too wacky at times, though it’s supposedly based on some of Ballinger’s real life experiences. Fans are still hopeful YouTube will pick up where Netflix left off.

Imaginary Mary

Would you believe this ABC show had 5.39 million viewers for the first episode? Unfortunately the viewership dropped to a staggering 2.13 million by the season’s final episode. The star Jenna Elfam is known for her role in Dharma & Greg, but some fans felt this couldn’t compare to her iconic role as Dharma. As of now, Jenna does not have any current projects, but hopefully she’ll surprise fans with a hit soon!

Incorporated

Futuristic stories are truly hit or miss shows. Sadly, this one was a major miss. Just one month after the first season concluded, Syfy announced that was the end. Poor Sean Teale also starred in Reign, which was prematurely canceled.

The Knick

Sadly, it seemed Cinemax was not the right fit for this medical show. The network has been moving towards more action dramas recently. Some felt if the show had premiered on HBO, it would have had a fighting chance to make it past just two seasons. Hopefully, this is not the last we see of the amazing Clive Owen!

Last Man Standing

This cancellation after six seasons really upset fans. With a megastar like Tim Allen, they did not understand why ABC chose to end it. Actually, the show was the second most watching ABC show for the 2016-2017 season. Allen even tweeted, “Stunned and blindsided by the network I called home for the last six years.” Others speculated that Allen’s words on Jimmy Kimmel may have influenced the decision. He compared his political identity of being a Republican in Hollywood to living in Germany during Nazi rule.

Love Thy Neighbor

Another blow for Tyler Perry. This show lasted four seasons on OWN. Although two shows of his on OWN were canceled, another one was picked up. So good news for Perry fans! The new show is called The Paynes, which is a spin-off of House of Payne.

Making History

Many were waiting for former Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester to return to television. Unfortunately, Making History was not quite the hit as her old show. In fact, though they planned on 13 episodes for the first season, FOX cut it to 9 shortly after the first episode aired. The show just did not bring in the viewers the network had hoped for.

Man Seeking Woman

This bizarre comedy was based on Simon Rich’s short stories called “The Last Girlfriend on Earth.” Ratings stayed steady and stars like comedian Eric Andre brought in many fans. Probably what kept the show going for three seasons were the superb reviews from critics. Perhaps, this show will be revived on a streaming network and become a Freaks & Geeks of sorts where everyone catches on and is upset they ever cancelled the show.

Night Shift

Actually, most were surprised this show lasted for four seasons. Honestly, reviews were mixed and even Rotten Tomatoes gave the first season a mere 4.3 out of 10 rating. Not to mention, when Ken Leung up and left the show after season three. NBC finally pulled the plug after seeing how low ratings were after the season four finale.

No Tomorrow

Based on a popular Brazilian series, this CW show did not fair well. Thus, it lasted for just a season. The show focused on Tori Anderson’s relationship dating one man while falling for another. I guess the show just didn’t translate.

Notorious

Apparently, networks are learning that legal dramas are so yesterday. This ABC show lasted one season. They hoped to differentiate themselves by basing the plot on real life events. Unfortunately, that did not seem to work. By episode 10, the viewership had decreased by half the number they started with for the premiere.

Outsiders

To be fair, this was only the third show for WGN. However, after the cancellation, Sony announced they would look for another network. The show lasted two seasons, and it took place in a fictional Kentucky town. Strangely enough, WGN had called this the most watched show on their network at a press conference just one week before canceling it. Thus, some speculated the network’s parent company, Tribute may have made the final decision.

Pitch

Pitch told the story of the first female who played in the MLB, known for her special screwball pitch. However, this one was not based on a real life story. Though it was still entertaining and got a 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Kylie Bunbury played the lead, Ginny Baker, and received rave reviews from critics. With all the positive feedback, many are asking FOX what happened? The one good news is that Mark Consuelos is starring in Riverdale.
