Beauty is indeed in the eyes of the beholder, but there are just some things that we can all recognize as ugly. There are many things that will fit this category, but this list will solely focus on cars. Over the years, some cars were seen as ‘pretty’ by a very small number of people. Here is the list of monstrosities that were also referred to by very few as cars.
2004 Covini C6W
The 2004 Covini C6W starts off our list of ugly cars. This 6-wheel monstrosity is equipped with an impressive engine, a 400 hp. However, we have to admit that it looks quite strange. Although its balance and brake are much better because of its two extra wheels, the design is too out-of-this-world to be taken seriously.
Marcos Mantis
Marcos was a British car manufacturer that specialized in producing sports cars. They were well-known for producing some ugly cars, but they seem to have outdone themselves when they made the Mantis. Good thing only one Mantis was made and released in 1968. It didn’t last and they had to take it off the market. This ugly car actually made an appearance in the Festival of Speed in 2008.
Troll Sportcoupé
When Troll Plastik & Bilindustri attempted to make a car with a body made of fiberglass, this was what they came up with. Fiberglass was specifically chosen by the Norwegian company because of its useful qualities such as its resistance to rust and the fact that it was lightweight. The way the car was put together was quite good. However, the design was an utter failure. This model only appeared on the market from 1956 to 1958. The next car model that this company made didn’t look as bad as this one, but it wasn’t very pretty either.
Hyundai Tiburon
This model has different names. It is officially called the Hyundai Tiburon. However, it is known as Hyundai Coupe in Europe. Tiburon is the Spanish word for ‘shark,’ and we have to admit, it does kind of look like an ugly-looking shark.
Stutz Blackhawk
The Stutz Blackhawk was first made in 1972, but even years after its production, we still don’t know what the designers were thinking when they made it. The car itself was 19 feet in length, which is almost 6 meters long! That is crazy long for a car! However, the King of Rock, Elvis Presley himself, apparently loved this car. Its hideous exterior was not the only problem, it was also crazy expensive at the time – more than $120,000 in 2017! The car cost is much too expensive, considering its relatively unknown car brand.
PT Cruiser
Chrysler, in general, is a pretty decent car brand. However, they really made a huge mistake when they manufactured this one – the PT Cruiser. To say that it was a failure would be an understatement. We don’t have much information regarding this car’s performance on the road, but as you can see, the design is really not that attractive.
Brubaker Box
The creator of this monstrosity at least had the good sense of giving it a very suitable name. It doesn’t take a genius to see that the Brubaker Box’s design is a disaster of epic proportions. The car’s appearance seems to have come out of a child’s drawing. It literally is just a strange-looking box on wheels and some even say that it looks similar to a gold bar. This van might be useful in cases like a nuclear war, but in general, we would steer clear of this vehicle.
Reliant Robin
This small odd-looking vehicle is not a motorcycle or a boat, everyone. It’s a car. However, the design does look like a very bad combination of a motorcycle, a car, and a boat. You might be surprised to know that the Reliant Robin was, in fact, a popular fiberglass car. It even got a spot in the list of ugliest cars in the world made by Top Car Magazine. This car was made to replace the Reliant Regal in 1973. There’s really no better way to describe this car except to say that it’s totally ugly.
2010 Veritas RS III
Vermot AG has reached its 60 or so years of manufacturing cars in 2010, so they wanted to make an awesome comeback that year. They may have outdone themselves and we really wish they hadn’t. They made the 2010 Veritas RS III, a car that really looked like a mean-looking monster. It looked like someone accidentally pressed the wrong button and summoned a smiling demon.
The Nissan Cube
We believe that no one actually thought of owning a car that literally looked like a cube, right? Who in their right mind would? This is precisely why it’s mind-boggling to see Nissan producing such a car. Just like its name, it does look like a cube, The Nissan Cube. It was initially produced in 1998, but we can still see one or two running on the road every once in a while.
Weber Sportscars aka ‘Faster One’
Switzerland’s effort to dethrone the Veyron as the fastest car on the street in 2008 created this monstrosity. The Weber Sportscar or the Faster One may have all the makings of a fast car, but it sadly lacked a lot in terms of design. In general, there were a lot of promising car designs all over the world in 2008. However, this car is a testimony that not all car makers have improved their designs.
Panoz Abruzzi ‘Spirit of Le Mans’
Here’s another perfect example of what to avoid in designing a sports car. This car was to have a price tag of £330,000! You got that right. The manufacturers originally planned to produce only 81 units of this abomination called The Panoz Abruzzi ‘Spirit of Le Mans.’ Luckily, it didn’t make it past the prototype stage and we didn’t get to see it on the market or on the street.
Citroën Ami
France may be known for its luxury goods like perfume, wine, and famous fashion brands, but this car sure proves that they also make mistakes. Citroën, a French car manufacturer created the Ami, but we think they shouldn’t have. Its odd design completed with its large headlamps and weird body shape didn’t have a lot to recommend it. It’s just looked like a sad attempt at car innovation.
Fiat Multipla
This car can really make one speechless. Fiat actually decided to design and make this car, the Multipla, exactly like this. Hard to believe, right? They released this car on the market in 1998, and they sold it until 2010. So, you can still see some units on the streets these days. However, the car does look a lot like a person trying to hold in a sneeze.
The Aurora
In 1957, there was a priest who decided to make the safest car in the world. His reason? The escalating death toll due to car accidents. The motivation was actually good. Some would even say it was great, but what he came up with was actually really disturbing – The Aurora. We just wish someone had the guts to tell the priest how ugly the car was.
2011 Nissan Leaf
This car really makes us question if people at Nissan knew what they were releasing. This car, the 2011 Nissan Leaf, is another failed attempt at making cars with innovative design. Although we salute their courage at trying to produce something different and exciting, we are sure that creating this is not right.
1973 Austin Allegro
By the time that this car was released on the market, it was actually pretty popular. However, in retrospect, we couldn’t figure out why. It looked like a carton on wheels and we couldn’t help but think that maybe people didn’t have better options then. The upside is that we can really see how much car design has improved over the years.
1959 Ford Anglia
This car, proves that making mistakes happens to the best of us. This vehicle, the 1959 Ford Anglia, may not be the worst-looking car there is, but it sure looks pretty awful. It has an awkward body shape and it wasn’t well-styled overall. Honestly, we can only give this design a score of 2 out of 10.
1990 Chrysler Imperial
This car with the black and boxy design made by Chrysler in 1990 really looks a lot like a sedan version of a hearse. Its appearance really reminds us of funerals. The 1990 Chrysler Imperial was not much of a looker, but we’re glad to note that this car brand has improved in the car designs department since.
1975 Ford Granada
If you’ve had dreams of driving a car that looked like a box with grilles, then you might like this one. However, if that is not the case, then we don’t know why Ford decided to produce this car. The 1975 Ford Granada looked like it was patterned from a box, literally.
1957 Trabant
People may have found the design of the 1957 Trabant quite attractive when it was released, but we would like to think that they regret it now. Maybe it’s not the worst-looking car, but it’s not that great either. Well, it got a spot on our list, right? Everything about it was just wrong, from its color to its odd body shape.
1996 Suzuki X90
The people at Suzuki seem to have combined all their bad ideas in one car – the 1996 Suzuki X90. It’s not just disturbingly small, but it also looks like it’s supposed to be a sports car with extremely ugly features.
1973 Oldsmobile Omega
If you want to drive a car that looks a lot like a cowboy car, then this one is for you. The 1973 Oldsmobile Omega has an ugly design that overall completes its hideous look.
2007 Jeep Compass
We think that Jeep is seriously regretting creating this car. Jeep may be well-known for their cool designs, but they really made a serious mistake with the 2007 Jeep Compass. It looks like a badly-inflated version of their usual classic Jeep design.
1986 Hyundai Excel
The 1986 Hyundai Excel looks like a real, life-size version of a car drawn by a child. Or a car made of Lego. This may not have been the best way to start their manufacturing business. Luckily, they have improved since then and have produced cars with better designs.
AMC Pacer
Believe it or not, the AMC Pacer was actually very popular when it was first released in 1975. It was described by the media as ‘unique,’ ‘futuristic’ and ‘bold.’ AMC even made an electric version of this car in response to the gasoline crisis in the 1970s. However, whichever way we look at it, we couldn’t see what made the car so popular. All we honestly see is a weird car.
Renault Fuego
We have to admit, some of the best classic cars in the 1930s were produced by the French. However, we think they lost their touch in the early 1980s. The Renault Fuego can prove this point. It was clearly a poor attempt at making a sports car. As far as ugly goes, it is just like the others that gets uglier by the minute.
Pontiac Aztek
The Pontiac Aztek sort of became a popular car model because of its ugly design. We have to admit, it does look like three designers who did not communicate with each other tried to put it together. The design doesn’t look like its various aspects are in harmony with each other.
Nissan S-Cargo
Nissan’s attempt at creating a retro-styled van resulted in this ugly design. It actually looks like a very unattractive snail. The Nissan S-Cargo can definitely function well in terms of hauling stuff, but we would not be caught dead driving such a vehicle.
Sebring-Vanguard CitiCar
You might find this hard to believe, but this strange-looking box that poses as a car used to be very popular in the U.S. as far as electric cars are concerned. However, it didn’t last long in the market since its release in 1974 as it only has a top speed of 39 miles per hour. We still couldn’t figure out how the designers thought that a triangular golf cart look was a good idea and really pushed through with its production.
Lightburn Zeta
The Lightburn Zeta came straight from Australia. It is smaller than a mini with an ambitious combination of the 50’s Cadillac in its design. The designers actually had the freedom to be more creative because its body was made of fiberglass. Unfortunately, it didn’t seem to have an advantage for the Zeta. It wasn’t only bad in the visual aspect, but its engine made driving a bore as the engine was lacking in many aspects.
Toyota MasterAce
Toyota made this microbus as a response to the minivan produced by Chrysler in 1983. However, the Toyota MasterAce just managed to look like a badly-conceived Japanese version of Volkswagen’s iconic microbus. We think Toyota is an amazing car maker, but they definitely made a mistake in creating this van.
Subaru BRAT
The actual meaning for the acronym BRAT is Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter. This car sure looks like a brat. Subaru made this odd-looking car in the 1970s, and we are glad that they have stopped producing.
Plymouth Prowler
It could be coincidence, but the Plymouth brand died not long after it released the Plymouth Prowler. We sure think that there is a connection somewhere. Anyway, this manufacturer tried to make an instant hit on the market by making a 50’s inspired car, but it sadly didn’t turn out as they expected. It would even cost a lot of money these days, despite having an ugly design.
1948 Studebaker Convertible
The 1948 Studebaker Convertible may not be the ugliest car out there, but it wouldn’t pass as a great one either. It basically looks like the usual convertible in the 1950s, only made smaller.
Chevrolet SSR
The Chevrolet SSR was a convertible truck with two passenger doors and awkward design. We don’t know what the designers were thinking when they made this. Maybe they thought a convertible truck was such a grand idea. However, it just made the Chevrolet SSR look like a badly stretched balloon instead of a stylish truck.
Chevrolet HHR
Obviously, the PT Cruiser was the inspiration for this rip-off by Chevrolet. They should have made it less obvious by changing the design a bit, but here we are…
Electra Meccanica Solo Ev Commuter
The Electra Meccanica Solo Ev Commuter looks like the designers missed a few things in its design like the other half of the car. It’s actually a three-wheeler and it’s legal to drive it on the streets. You got that right. Another surprising thing about this car is that it has a top speed of 82 miles per hour.
Sbarro 4×4 +2 Concept Car
This car may just be a concept, but the design is so out of this world that we just have to include it on this list. It is not just an ordinary 4×4 drive. It is a 4×4 plus two more wheels. Its unusual number of wheels is not the only thing that’s weird about it. It also has too many bumpers as well as an overall hideous appearance. As we previously mentioned, it is otherworldly.
Jensen S-V8
Most British classics are known for their beauty and special car designs. However, the Jensen S-V8 is clearly the exception. It kinda looks like the car version of the Frankenstein because of its strange design. It appears to be a combination of many different cars rolled into one.
Jetstream SC250
Obviously, the designers were going for something that would look cool and fast. Sadly, the Jetstream CS250 doesn’t even come close to what they have expected. It looks like it had an accident while trying to get out of a racing video game. Thus, its weird design.
Bufori Geneva
Our guess is that the Bufori Geneva was meant to look like a Rolls Royce with a little twist. However, the snout-like grille really made the design look bad. Something must have malfunctioned in the production of this Rolls Royce knockoff and the designers had no choice but to take responsibility for it.
Aston Martin Lagonda Shooting Brake
Ever wanted to drive a rocket? This may be your only chance! This hearse-like car looked so badly stretched that you can’t help but think that it’s a rocket or something similar. The Aston Martin Lagonda Shooting is definitely an exception from the list of the otherwise stunning cars produced by the same manufacturer.
Marcos Mantis XP
Video games must have been super famous at one point. It was obviously the inspiration for the Marcos Mantis XP. However, it has a strange design with a badly dented hood up front! It makes you think that this car would attract accidents even before you drive it!
Marcos Mantis M70
Marcos didn’t seem to get it, but they clearly needed a break. The designers must have run out of good designs that they even went through the bad ones. Our guess is that they were aiming for a car that looks similar to the one used in ‘Back to the Future,’ but this one is an epic fail.
Mitsuoka Orochi
This car may look like an alien but it is actually a car called the Mitsuoka Orochi. The designers must have wanted to make a car that looks futuristic, but the design just didn’t come out as they expected. What’s more astonishing about this car is that it was actually the production line!
Tirrito Ayrton R
This car, the Trirrito Ayrton R, was originally made as a tribute to a popular car racing driver. However, it clearly doesn’t look like a good one. The four small headlights and the over the top angular design sure made the car look hideous. Talk about good intentions with bad execution.
Ssangyong Rodius
You may still see this car on the street every now and then. The Ssangyong Rodius is basically a minivan that looks like it wants to transform into a beautiful SUV and failed spectacularly. The transformation obviously didn’t go so well because we are left with this oddball.
Stutz Bearcat II
It looks like Cruella De Ville would love to take this car out for a drive. Supervillains would surely love its over-the-top design, complete with big bumper and headlights. If it weren’t for the excessive details in front, this car would actually pass for a pretty cool ride.
Sbarro Autobau
We are not sure if it is a shaver or a comb, but we do know that this is one ugly car! This concept car was shown in public in 2010 and we’re surprised it even reached that stage. Good thing it didn’t reach the production line.
Pontiac Trans Sport
This minivan sure is one ugly ride. It kind of reminds us of a portable vacuum cleaner. Minivans are quite popular for their functionality especially for families with more than two children. This one, however, is definitely not a looker.
Volkswagen Type 181 – The Thing
The Volkswagen Type 181 or otherwise known as The Thing looks like a box with no roof on wheels! If you ever wanted to drive one then, now is your chance. Come to think of it, The Thing is a suitable name for this car as we ourselves find it hard to make another name for it. Besides, it’s easier to refer to it as The Thing.
Lamborghini LM002
Lamborghini did not just produce sports cars. They also attempted to make an SUV, the Lamborghini LM002. We can’t help but think that it wasn’t a good one and that we hope they would stop. It looks like it took a serious hit and that someone went raging mad, hitting the underside of the hood repeatedly.
Isuzu VehiCROSS
There are many words that we can use to describe this car, but we definitely cannot use beautiful. You can see what we mean. It looks like a deflating balloon, so it’s no surprise that Isuzu took it out of the market after three model years. We think it was the right choice.
Reva G-Wiz
This car, the Reva G-Wiz, may have been made to help solve the parking issues in urban areas as well as give an electric solution for traffic jams, it doesn’t change the fact that it is ugly. It has the appearance of a toy car disguising as a real one.
1990 Chevrolet Lumina APV
Minivans were originally conceived to maximize the space inside the car. But we can’t help but wonder why this one, the 1990 Chevrolet Lumina APV, has such a long front. It just feels like driving from the backseat if you ask us.
Jeep Renegade
Jeep has produced some really good-looking SUVs throughout the years. But the Jeep Renegade is definitely not one of them. Come to think of it. Why would you buy this when you can buy a Jeep with a much better aesthetic quality?
Corbin Sparrow
The Corbin Sparrow really reminds us of a jellybean, so if you ever wanted to drive one, then this is your time. It may look like a motorcycle, but is actually is a car. That’s why it made its way on this list.
Bond Bug
This vehicle may be called the Bond Bug, but we are sure that James Bond has nothing to do with it and will probably never drive it. Its appearance is more similar to a vacuum than a car with three wheels. Would you believe that they produced this to be a ‘fun car’?
1961 Amphicar
The 1961 Amphicar is another failed attempt of the manufacturers to made a smaller version of a real car. Its exterior is not that only weird thing about it, but like what its name indicates, it can drive through water. Yes, you read that right.
1996 Pontiac Grand Am
The 1996 Pontiac Grand Am is proof that Pontiac was seriously obsessed with plastic in the 1990s. The car’s design didn’t have much to recommend it as it looked more like a Tupperware container than a moving vehicle. Aside from its horrible appearance, its engine was also not that great as it only had a 150 horsepower, 4-cylinder engine.
1993 Ford Aspire
Quite contrary to its name, the 1993 Ford Aspire is one car that no one would aspire to own. It didn’t just have a bad design; its engineering was not that good either. It had a 4-cylinder engine which would better fit a sewing machine as it only had 60 horsepower and a manual 5-speed transmission.
2010 Chevy Aveo
The 2010 Chevy Aveo is an obvious attempt of Chevrolet from its jellybean-looking cars. However, it’s hard to say that the design of this car is an improvement. It clearly isn’t. What’s worse was that the interior lacked soundproofing making it a car that was so cheaply made.
1992 Subaru SVX
While we all know that Subaru creates cars which are dependable and practical, their 1992 Subaru SVX is just clearly an exception. It didn’t just have bad engineering with its 4-speed transmission, it also had an exterior that looked like an accidental design! It had split windows which are hard to describe and even harder to use. To make things worse, the Italian-designed car had a price tag which was more than $10,000 higher than other Subaru cars.
1997 GM EV-1
It sure was great for GM to make an electric car in 1997, but the GM EV-1 was not well-thought off or even well-designed. It could only run for 80 miles and was only made for leasing. It’s hard to see one of these running on the streets as GM gathered almost all of them back in 2002.
1992 Ford Probe
There are a lot of cars with bad names but we have to say that Ford Probe would top seriously top the list or at least make it to the top ten. This car that looks like a shoe seems to have been made for speed. However, all it has accomplished was looking like an extra-terrestrial object. Ford and Mazda made this model together. You would think these two big names in the car manufacturing industry would make something really great, but the Ford Probe had a weak four-wheel drive as well as V6 that ultimately destroyed its chances of topping the sales charts. They ended up taking it off the market after eight years.
1989 Geo Metro
Here’s another product of collaboration. This time between Suzuki and GM. The 1989 Geo Metro had a 3-cylinder engine which was considered slow as it can barely produce 50 horsepower. The interior was obviously cheap and the exterior, well, looked like a bean. As you can see. It is no surprise that this car made it to the different online lists of worst cars. Well, it may not be the worst as we have heard many of the owners claiming that it can still be driven even after the 250,000-mile mark.
1999 Toyota Echo
You will be very disappointed when you get the 1999 Toyota Echo at the car rental. Aside from the fact that it drove like a go-cart, it had equally bad interior and exterior designs. It has the appearance of a huge gummy bear on wheels and accelerating would feel like stepping on mashed potatoes. This is definitely not one of the usual cars that Toyota makes.
1998 Land Rover Discovery II
The 1998 Land Rover Discovery II sure broke Britain’s record of making iconic cars. It sure is the exception. It not only had a lot of electrical problems, but its design clearly looks problematic as well! It should be driven in a safari than on a city street.
1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible
Just one glance at the 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible and you would know how terrible things can go in designing a car. The bulky Tupperware container-looking car has B-pillar that would make you want to permanently seal the top.
1995 Chevy Monte Carlo
The 1995 Chevy Monte Carlo would have been a cool ride in the early 1970s. However, it was made in the wrong era. It simply looks like a spaceship. What’s worse is that the badly-designed car was a front-wheel drive whose V6 engine was performing badly.
2012 Dodge Caliber
While collaborations, in general, produce good results, the 2012 Dodge Caliber clearly proves that it’s not always true. It has a hatchback that has a front-wheel drive. Its dark interior had a lot of blind spots and its 2.0L engine called the World Gasoline Engine was just terrible. Aside from that, the exterior design is kind of the same boring, boxy type that Dodge usually has for its cars.
1999 Jaguar S-Type
The 1999 Jaguar S-Type did not impress a lot of people when it was first released in 1998. Its design was nothing but boring. It looked like Jaguar’s poor attempt at combining some classic car designs. It was seen as outdated and awkward even when it was first released, so it was quite surprising to know that Jaguar continued producing it until 2007.
2009 Smart ForTwo
The 2009 Smart ForTwo may seem like a good idea for those who live in big cities, but in reality, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. The only thing that this European micro-car got going for it is its size. This car has a vague and searching transmission, as well as bad fuel economy for a such a small car. The exterior is much worse. Aside from the fact that it looks like a children’s toy, its paint is constantly peeling. What an annoying car to have!
1997 Daewoo Nubira
You may not remember this car, but we don’t blame you for it. The 1997 Daewoo Nubira is another product of a collaboration with bad results. Its design is pretty underwhelming with its terrible build quality, nasty plastic-wrapped interior, and a weak inline 4-cylinder engine.
Sir Vival
The Sir Vival was quite similar to the Aurora because it was also created to address the safety problems in Detroit in the 1950s. Its creator even called it a “revolutionary vehicle.” It is indeed innovative as it included safety measures like a roller cage, rubber bumpers, seat belts, sliding doors, and side lights. Its most prominent feature was its two-part frame, which we think was the reason why it didn’t reach the production line. The car was really great, theoretically. However, its design and execution were unfortunately bad that it looked less of a car and more of a vacuum cleaner.
1941 Horch 853 SportCabriolet
Long before Audi was known as, well, Audi, it was Horch. This car brand released the 853 SportCabriolet in 1941 which was one of the last few cars made by the said car brand. Although most Horch cars followed a classic theme, this one was clearly not one of them. Although the car didn’t originally look like this, it transitioned to this design at one point, so we had to include it on this list. It would have been an ideal ride for work with its 4.9L straight-8 engine, but the changes on its design made it look like a cicada with wheels. Also, the glasswork of this car must have turned the interior into an oven.
1957 Jeep FC-150
At one point, Willy Motors produced their own line of four-wheel drive Jeep trucks which was a pretty new idea for the company at that time. The trucks were revolutionary at the time and were quite easy to maneuver. Despite the innovative side of this vehicle, we cannot miss noting that its design made it look like a badly created toy. We must say that we’re glad Jeep vehicles do not look anything like it anymore.
1947 Julien MM5
The Julien MM5 was a French convertible that the French government had to green-lit because of shortage. It was produced from 1947 to 1949. Although it was government-approved, not many were made, and it had different kinds of engines in its timeline. At best, its performance was described as “acceptable.” However, we can’t get over its design. It literally looked like an insect. They may have been inspired by the classic Volkswagen Beetle.
1965 Peel Trident
The 1965 Peel Trident, was the second three-wheeler micro car manufactured by Peel. Its brand-new design was quite different from the Peel P50 which had a one-seat design. Amazingly, Peel Trident had two seats. It’s hard to imagine someone actually spending money to buy this car. If it would pass for one, that is. To be honest, we thought it came straight out of a board game.
