Selleck went to the University of Southern California on a basketball scholarship. On the side, he worked as a model. He was actually enrolled under the Business Administration program but his drama coach told him to try acting. Selleck, fortunately, followed the advice and studied acting under Milton Katselas of the Beverly Hills Playhouse.

Surprisingly, he also served in the U.S. Army for quite some time. He was assigned to the 160th Infantry Regiment of the California Army National Guard. Selleck has spoken about his time in the military proudly, “I am a veteran, I’m proud of it. I was a sergeant in the U.S. Army infantry, National Guard, Vietnam era. We’re all brothers and sisters in that sense.”
