Benedict Cumberbatch portrayed Alan Turing, a brilliant computer scientist, mathematician, and cryptanalyst who is best remembered for decrypting German intelligence codes during World War II. Turing played a rather pivotal role in cracking intercepted coded messages which then enabled the Allies to defeat the Nazis in numerous crucial engagements. However he was prosecuted in 1952 for homosexual acts and died from cyanide poisoning just two years later. In 2013, Queen Elizabeth granted him with a posthumous pardon.
