At the time, he joined a small number of men known to have contracted the disease from heterosexual relations. Hard to believe, but a simple coin clip ended up defining Magic Johnson’s career. During the 1979 NBA Draft 22 teams chose amateur players from American universities. By chance, the LA Lakers won the coin flip. That’s when they went for Magic Johnson. If they hadn’t won the coin flip, Johnson would have gone to the Chicago Bulls.

Due to the American desegregation busing policy, Magic Johnson attended a predominantly white high school called Everett. Sadly, he faced a lot of racism, even on the basketball court. At times, his teammates wouldn’t even pass him the pass! They would ignore him, and he often got into fights with other players. Eventually, he accepted it and he now sees this as one of the best things that he experienced.

Despite retiring in 1991, the star’s net worth only increased upon his retirement. He transitioned from basketball to business. Magic Johnson even invested early in Starbucks before it became world famous. He ended up selling his interest in more than 100 franchises for a whopping $27 million. Magic Johnson has made history in many ways. Did you know he’s the only rookie that has won the NBA Finals MVP award? During game six of the finals when the Lakers faced off against the Philadelphia 76ers, the Lakers were missing the incredible Kareem Abdul-Jabbar because of injury. Alas, Magic Johnson decided to come back from retirement for a final and third time to join the Lakers for another season. After an intense workout, he played his first comeback game on January 30, 1996. The Lakers were playing the Golden State Warriors. Johnson was 36 at the time. He averaged 14.6 points. After those 32 regular season games, he retired from the NBA once and for all.

Johnson did however join the Swedish club team, M7 Borås and was undefeated for five games. Also, he became a part-owner of them, but the project ended up failing. Later on, Johnson joined The Great Danes, a Danish team.

Before those adventures in Scandinavia, he became a minority owner of the Lakers. In 1994, he allegedly paid about $10 million for a four percent stake in the Lakes. Thus, he became a Lakers minority owner before he sold his share to Patrick Soon-Shiong in 2010. However, he continued on as an unpaid VP before coming back in 2017 as an advisor to Jeanie Buss.

Apparently, Magic Johnson, president of basketball operations for the Lakers, met with Lebron James when he became a free agent. Magic Johnson was very close with Jerry Buss, the former Lakers owner. In fact, Johnson even referred to him as a second father and also best friend. He spent give hours with Buss at the hospital only months before Buss died of cancer in 2013. Only hours after Buss passed, Johnson told the media, “Without Dr. Jerry Buss, there is no Magic.”

Perhaps, you remember the 1992 Dream Team or United States’ men’s basketball team at the Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Out of his whole basketball career, Magic Johnson called that moment his best. After his public announcement that he contracted HIV, Johnson came forward with some more personal information. He admitted to sleeping with between 300 and 500 people before the diagnosis. Apparently, he would bring women into the locker room sauna. He brought them there before and after games and press conferences.
