Coal miners used to check for poisonous gasses underground with canaries. These days, scientists use “ecosystem canaries” to see how an ecosystem is doing. The species are not actually canaries, perhaps not even birds to begin with. However, they are species that have begun dying before the collapse of the whole ecosystem. In general, they tend to reproduce slowly and do not fare well when it comes to competing for resources. Similar to the keystone species, they are not exactly the most important parts of the ecosystem. However, they can signal its current conditions.
