Quite contrary to how the situation would be dealt with today, friends and family tried to force feed Karen. Since anorexia and bulimia were still relatively new disorders, no-one realized that they were mental disorders. So trying to feed her would have never helped her anyway.

Karen’s funeral was attended by more than 1000 people. Despite being extremely thin, she kept it secret from the public that she was sick. Her death was one of the major eye-openers that pushed the public to start taking anorexia seriously.
